Is Turkish Airlines straining the Star Alliance?
July 30, 2010 · Comments Off
Turkish Airlines today finalized new direct service to Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, continuing the torrid growth that could soon make it Europe’s third-largest airline by passenger count. If THY overtakes British Airways for the third-place slot, Europe’s balance of power among airline alliances would see a major shift. Air France-KLM would still represent SkyTeam at No. 2, but Star Alliance would dominate, with Turkish at No. 3 and Lufthansa at No. 1. You might think that prospect would have Star executives rubbing their hands in anticipation. But according to The Wall Street... [Read the full story]

Top 5 LCCs that belong in a global alliance
July 27, 2010 · 1 Comment
Now that the dam has been breached and Oneworld is welcoming a low-cost carrier into its membership, the obvious question is: Who’s next? Not just any airline will do. The aggressive n0-frills strategy of Spirit or Ryanair would be an uneasy fit alongside Swiss, Qantas, Korean or other airlines that emphasize high levels of service. Airlines that balance low fares and high quality are relatively scarce, so you can bet the phones are already ringing in company headquarters around the world. Now that Air Berlin is already committed, the “most-wanted” list might look something like... [Read the full story]

Which round-the-world ticket offers the best deal?
July 28, 2010 · Comments Off
After our post several weeks ago dissecting the cost of SkyTeam’s 10th anniversary round-the-world pass, several readers wrote to ask the cost-per-mile price on RTW tickets from the other alliances. Just a quick review: After some investigation, we found that SkyTeam’s fare for a 29,000-mile pass was $4569, or 15.75 cents per mile. (This assumes a North American departure booked with Delta Air Lines; other origin points will vary in price.) In business class, the same pass is $8880, or 30.62 cents per mile. The nearest comparable product from Oneworld is a Tier 1 Global Explorer pass... [Read the full story]

Independents
Emirates vs. the world
July 13, 2010 · Comments Off
Emirates faces a growing chorus of criticism from European carriers who worry that the Dubai-based independent airline is eating into their lucrative long-haul business. KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa all have expressed reservations about Emirates’ growth, according to Air Transport World, and France reportedly has denied additional slots at Paris CDG. In a recent white paper, Lufthansa warned policymakers that further expansion by Emirates would export jobs to Dubai. But Emirates struck back with some “green paper,” placing an order for 32 additional Airbus A380s worth some... [Read the full story]
